What are Urban Heat Islands?

Climate change is increasing temperatures. The severity and frequency of heat waves impacts everyone. But some places and people in our community feel those impacts more acutely. Urban heat islands, or more commonly called "heat waves", is the phenomenon where urban areas experience higher temperatures compared to surrounding rural areas due to the built environment, human activities, and a lack of vegetation. This can lead to a range of negative impacts on public health, energy consumption, and the environment.
