A Brief History of Environmental Justice

Environmental justice is the principle that all individuals (regardless of their race, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, or geographic location) should have equal access to a clean and healthy environment.

It seeks to address the disproportionate environmental burdens and risks that certain communities face due to systemic inequalities and discriminatory practices.

Environmental justice recognizes that marginalized communities often bear the brunt of environmental pollution, toxic waste, and other hazards, leading to adverse health outcomes and decreased quality of life.

It also acknowledges that these communities often lack the resources and political power to address these issues independently. As such, Environmental justice advocates for fair and equitable distribution of environmental benefits and burdens and the meaningful participation of affected communities in environmental decision-making processes.

It is important because it seeks to promote social and environmental justice, advance human rights, and ensure a sustainable future for all.
